Sherman: Yankees rejected K-Rod deal

Via Joel Sherman’s Twitter:

Heard #Yankees rejected similar deal for K-Rod, in part, because then either Soriano or K-Rod have pitch 7th inning and (cont) #Mets

If you haven’t heard, Francisco Rodriguez wound up with the Brewers in exchange for two players to be named later.

It certainly would have been an interesting situation with two loose cannons in the bullpen who think they should be closing when there’s a guy named Mariano Rivera still in town. I think it’s a scene the Yankees were right to avoid, even though they could use some bullpen help to make up for all of their injuries. Your thoughts?

It’s worth noting that Scott Boras had some interesting comments regarding K-Rod after representing Rafael Soriano this past offseason.

… Boras told Newsday’s Ken Davidoff on Monday, “Francisco Rodriguez is a historic closer. He’s not going anywhere to be a setup man.”

Boras added, “Closers don’t make good setup men. Does anyone want an unhappy setup man in their clubhouse?”

Nice, Scott.

The reason Francisco Rodriguez did not become a Yankee is twofold: He's not good enough, and he's a loose cannon. In other words, even if he WAS good enough, he can't be trusted. I think the Brewers just threw away a Pennant.
What I don't understand is how little the Mets got for him. They shipped K-Rod + cash for two players to be named later. I realize all the contract issues, but the Mets should have gotten more. And yes, you don't want K-Rod and his chemistry on a Yankee team that is over-achieving in part due to great chemistry. I realize the Yankees are in trouble for the second half - e.g., can Colon and Garcia possibly duplicate their first halves? Will Hughes do anything? But K-Rod was not the answer.
It was the right move for the Yankees to make in not making the move for all reasons already stated. But I think it's a good move for the Brewers. I can tell you from living out in Milwaukee that their middle relief in front of Axford is atrocious.

But from a Yankee perspective, why give up anything for a setup man when they have Soriano coming back and D-Rob pitching lights out?
