Who is Melky Mesa and why is he on the Yankees’ 40-man roster?

The Yankees added Melky Mesa to the 40-man roster. But why?

Chad Gaudin and Royce Ring were both outrighted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, removing them from the 40-man roster. Gaudin immediately elected free agency.

Filling one of those spots is toolsy outfielder Melky Mesa. Mesa would have been eligible for free agency had he not been added to the 40-man, hence this move being made immediately before other players are protected from the Rule 5.

OK. Now who is this Mesa guy?

Well, he’s a 23-year-old outfielder in the low minor league levels of the Yankees organization. He’s a career .236 hitter, but he’s coming off his best year to date with the Tampa Yankees.

He is in his 5th year and just in single A, He will debut with the Yankees at age 47

Actually, I think Mesa has a realistic shot at being on the team in 2011. He strikes out too much and is going to have to continue to improve on that and getting his average up. But he's got great speed and an absolute cannon for an arm. Because of that I can see him filling the Greg Golson/Freddy Guzman role in 2011. Because of the pop in his bat he's actually a much better option than either of those. Especially if he has a good season this year.

We need more Melky's! i actually loved Melky Cabrera, too bad he wasnt Allstar caliber, he was a great defensive outfielder, average at the plate with some pop, i think he's better than Gardner, we know what Cabrera is, a 8 hitter, 280 avg. 15-18hr guy gold glove caliber, think Andreu Jones minus the roids! Gardner is a 8th hitter, no pop, slap hitter with great speed, think Otis Nixon

creo que melki reune ciertas cualidades que los yankees andaban buscando desde años puede batear para poder tiene un exelente braso se puede robar mas de 30 bases en las grandes ligas poreso entiendo que los yanquees an tomado la mejor decision con este muchacho
