Cashman: Nova likely in Yanks ’11 rotation

“I think Ivan Nova has a good chance to be in our rotation, regardless,” Brian Cashman said. He meant regardless of whether the Yankees sign Lee or convince Pettitte to return for one more season.

“I don't care if they’re inexperienced or not, they'll make your problems go away real quick," Cashman said.

Woah. I think now is a good time for my first projected Yankees rotation of the offseason.

1. CC Sabathia
2. Andy Pettitte
3. Phil Hughes
4. A.J. Burnett
5. Ivan Nova

(The order isn’t very crucial, but going by performance I put Hughes ahead of Burnett.)

I’m assuming everyone noticed there’s no Cliff Lee listed in that rotation. Even though Jon Heyman thinks the only sure thing about this offseason is that the Yankees will sign Lee, I’m trusting Cashman (like I said this morning).

If Pettitte decides to call it quits, then there would be a slot open for Lee. I highly doubt this. This isn’t the first time he’s debated retirement in the offseason. Or the second. The fact is: he’s 38 years old with plenty of juice left in the tank.

It definitely could be an effort to drive Lee's price tag down. But I don't think Cashman lauded Crosby like he did for Nova.
I have a feeling that Nova will be in the rotation next year and AJ will pitch his way out of the rotation.
It might also be posturing on Cashman's part. He's telling Lee and Pettitte that he's not desperate. He might also be signaling AJ to get his act together.
I doubt he is telling AJ to get his act together. Pettitte could retire. I wouldn't consider it out of the question at all. If he comes back I'd like to see him get extra rest. I think Jon Garland would be a fantastic signing. Cliff Lee may come to New York, but I sure hope not. He is getting older, will require a Sabathia type contract, and remember...he has 0 rings.
