Clete Boyer Featured Card of the Week

My dad used to always tell me Clete Boyer was one of the best defensive third basemen of all time. He may always be remembered for his two plays in the 1961 World Series in which he dove to stop the ball and threw out the runner from his knees.

But Boyer only won one Gold Glove, and that came in 1969 with the Atlanta Braves. He did have one solid offensive season, also with the Braves, in 1967, but his career OPS+ of 86 says it all.

Boyer was a good 3rd baseman, but Criag Nettles was better!

My dad mentioned Nettles too. I dunno, even though I wasn't around back then, I think Brooks Robinson was the best defensive third baseman of all time.
Brooks was the best, they called him "Hoover" like the vacuum cleaner. But overall I'd take Nettles when you combine fielding and hitting. Nettles was an RBI machine! Best Nettles quote "When I was a kid I wanted to either join the circus or play baseball. With the Yankees I can do both"
