It’s Sept. 1, and it’s time for September call-ups. Jon Heyman is reporting via twitter the Yankees will call up catcher Francisco Cervelli, LHP Michael Dunn, RHP Mark Melancon and utility infielder Ramiro Pena.
All but Dunn have played for the Yankees this season. Dunn is a left-handed reliever who had a fine year in the minors. He started the year in Trenton and was promoted with a 3.71 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 53-1/3 innings. In 19-1/3 innings with Scranton, he has only allowed five runs and has struck out 22. However, his BB/IP has gone up significantly since the promotion.
Here is a breakdown of the rest of the call-ups’ stats in the majors this year.
- Cervelli: 25 G, 78 AB, 10 R, 21 H, 1 HR, 9 RBI, .269/.284/.346
- Melancon: 9 G, 11-1/3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 6 BB, 7 K, 3.18 ERA
- Pena: 53 G, 94 AB, 14 R, 26 H, 7 RBI, 3 SB, 1 CS, .277/.313/.351
I completely agree with this first group of call-ups. I would have chosen the same four myself. In the beginning of the year, I was expecting Austin Jackson to be a call-up for sure, but I would not be in support of that now. There should be a few more call-ups later on in the month.
UPDATE (4:23 p.m.): Bryan Hoch tweets Edwar Ramirez was also called up.
