Reggie Jackson Featured Yankee Card of the Week

jackson (2)I chose this card of Reggie Jackson in honor of his 563 career home runs, as he was surpassed last week by Alex Rodriguez, and dropped to 12th on the list of all-time home run leaders.

The Yankees signed Jackson before the 1977 season, and he led them to a championship that year and in ‘78. He earned the nickname “Mr. October” when he hit three homers on three consecutive pitches in the ‘77 World Series against the Dodgers.

This card is a 2001 Upper Deck Legends of New York Banner Seasons, and has little value. It is one of a 200-card set that features nearly all of the “legends of New York.” The set is interesting, because the team name on the front of each card is made of felt that actually juts out from the card.

Its great that he was chosen! I think it was well deserved! The man is legendary and deserves to be recognized especially with ARod surp***ing his records. In my opinion Jackson is a better player cause he achieved his stats fairly without enhancements. Not many can do what he has done without drug use...probably why he has been chosen as one of the 25 sports icons of this time. He gets to go to the Bahamas for poker and golf and everything!

You are very right. Jackson has been unrecognized for a while now, and it seems that A-Rod p***ing him his given him the most attention he's had had in years. Even though he was hated in the clubhouse, he still brought the team two World Series rings. How many rings has A-Rod brought the Yankees? Zero.

I agree, A-fraud has nothing on Mr. October. The Yanks have just as much talent as they did back in Reggie's day (if not more), but their leadership is lacking and that has proven to be the difference between greatness and an early post-season exit. It's great to see a Yankee legend make the list for the top 25 sports icons of our generation, you have to be an established player (and person) to be considered one of the most recognized athletes of all time. One question though, why are they all getting together down in the Bahamas? Is this is a convention of some sort?

I don't think it is a convention. Probably just the same reason everyone else goes down there: relaxation and maybe a little golf. That's my guess.

I didn't know Jackson was named a a top 25 sports icon. Do you have a link where I could see the rest?
