I can't totally agree with Girardi's first point. This means that we cannot give other players "half-days off." For example, we will probably need to give guys like Jorge Posada and Johnny Damon days off in the field, but we won't be able to DH them because of Matsui.
Matsui's legs are a major concern for me and I think it should be for the Yankees too. He is normally a good offensive weapon, but he is becoming a liability on defense.
His contract expires after this season, and I don't see the need to re-sign him. The Yankees have too many outfielders as it is, and there will be a huge market for outfielders for next season.

Absolutely no way to re-sign him, although he should definitely be the starting DH this year if Posada can catch.
That being said, I'm not sure why you'd want to DH Posada or Damon over Matsui, considering he's just as good as Posada and a little better than Damon with the bat. Maybe Posada against lefties, I guess. But then you'd want Nady in the field and Matsui on the bench.
I'm saying that sometimes Girardi gives half days to guys like Posada and Damon so we can still have their bats in the lineup. Since Matsui's injured, the Yanks can't just swap Damon and Matsui - one of them has to sit out.
I think Matsui is going to need enough full days off that players will get chances as the DH.
I hope you are right, but we need an additional steady bat in the lineup besides (hopefully) Teixeira.
